Arial Narrow in Google Docs & Canva: Best Substitutes
Last reviewed by the ArialNarrow.com editorial team
Short answer
Neither Google Docs nor Canva includes Arial Narrow, because it's a paid Monotype font. In Google Docs, add Archivo Narrow or Roboto Condensed through More fonts. In Canva, search for the same two names. Both are free and look close.
Add a close match in Google Docs
- Click the font name in the toolbar (it usually says Arial).
- Choose More fonts at the top of the list.
- Search for Archivo Narrow and click it so it turns blue. Add Roboto Condensed too if you want more weights.
- Click OK. Both fonts now sit in your font menu in every Doc, Sheet and Slides file.
Which substitute should you pick?
| Font | Looks like Arial Narrow? | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Archivo Narrow | Closest overall | Documents, resumes, reports |
| Roboto Condensed | Similar width, rounder | Slides, Sheets, many weights |
| PT Sans Narrow | Friendlier, more humanist | Long text that still needs to be narrow |
| Oswald | Taller and more compressed | Headlines only |
Working with Word files that use Arial Narrow
Teams that mix Word and Google Docs often hit the same problem. A Word user sets a table in Arial Narrow, and in Docs it suddenly overflows the page. A few habits prevent it:
- Agree on one font everyone has. Roboto Condensed works in Docs and can be installed for free in Word.
- Share PDFs for anything final, like invoices, CVs and reports.
- Leave a little spare room in tables so a substitute font doesn't push them onto a new page.
Using Word as well? Our Word, Excel and PowerPoint guide shows how to embed fonts so they travel with the file.
Canva in two minutes
Select a text box, open the font dropdown, and type Archivo Narrow or Roboto Condensed. If your brand guide insists on real Arial Narrow and you have a paid Canva plan, upload it to your Brand Kit only after you buy a license that allows it. The Arial Narrow license guide explains why.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I find Arial Narrow in Google Docs?
Google Docs only offers fonts it can serve from Google Fonts, and Arial Narrow is a paid Monotype font. Docs also cannot use fonts installed on your own computer, so installing Arial Narrow locally does not help.
What happens to Arial Narrow when I open a Word file in Google Docs?
Docs shows the text in a substitute font, so lines can wrap differently and tables may grow. Check the layout carefully before you send it back, and export a PDF for anything final.
Can I upload Arial Narrow to Canva?
Canva Pro, Teams and some education plans let you upload fonts to a Brand Kit. Canva asks you to confirm that you have the right to use the font that way, and the standard Office license does not cover uploading Arial Narrow to a third-party service. Buy a suitable license from Monotype first, or use a free alternative.
Which free font in Canva looks most like Arial Narrow?
Search the Canva font menu for Roboto Condensed or Archivo Narrow. Both are free for all Canva users. For bolder headlines, Barlow Condensed and Oswald work well.
