How to Download & Install Arial Narrow (Windows, Mac & Linux)

Last reviewed by the ArialNarrow.com editorial team

Short answer

Most people already own Arial Narrow without knowing it. Microsoft Office includes it on Windows and Mac (on a Mac, only the Office apps can use it). If you don't use Office, buy a desktop license from Monotype or MyFonts and install the four TTF files. On Linux, use Liberation Sans Narrow, which has the same widths.

1. Where to get Arial Narrow legally

Monotype owns Arial Narrow, so every legal copy traces back to Monotype or to software that licenses it. Pick whichever of these fits you:

Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365

Word, Excel and PowerPoint install it on Windows and on Mac. You pay nothing extra, and you can use it in any document you make.

Best for most people

Monotype or MyFonts

Buy a standalone desktop, web or app license straight from the foundry. You need this to embed it in a website or app. Our buying guide explains which license to pick.

Third-party download: DaFontStyle's Arial Narrow page. We don't host font files. Check that you hold a valid license before you use any file you download from a third party, and read how to check a downloaded font first.

2. Install Arial Narrow on Windows 11 and 10

  1. Check first: open C:\Windows\Fonts and search for "Arial Narrow". If you see it, you already have it.
  2. If it is missing and you have Office, run Office repair from Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify > Quick Repair.
  3. If you bought the font, unzip the download so you can see ARIALN.TTF, ARIALNB.TTF, ARIALNI.TTF and ARIALNBI.TTF.
  4. Select all four files, right-click, and choose "Install for all users".
  5. Close and reopen Word, Photoshop or any open app so it picks up the new font.

Prefer drag and drop? Drop the files onto Settings > Personalization > Fonts and Windows installs them for you.

3. Install Arial Narrow on macOS

  1. Open Font Book (press Cmd + Space and type "Font Book") and search for Arial Narrow. If Word lists it but Font Book does not, you only have Office's private copy.
  2. If it is missing, double-click each licensed .ttf file.
  3. Click "Install" in the preview window that opens.
  4. Restart Pages, Keynote, Word or whichever app you want to use it in.

Mac users run into a few quirks of their own, like Pages swapping the font when you open a Word file. Our Arial Narrow on Mac guide covers them.

4. Linux and ChromeOS

No Linux distribution can legally ship Arial Narrow. Install Liberation Sans Narrow instead. Every character matches Arial Narrow's width, so documents keep their line and page breaks. LibreOffice switches to it automatically.

# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt install fonts-liberation

# Fedora
sudo dnf install liberation-narrow-fonts

Package names change between releases. If one fails, search your package manager for "liberation narrow". See the Liberation Sans Narrow comparison for what changes visually.

5. Fix common install problems

The font installed but an app doesn't list it
Quit the app completely and open it again. Most programs only scan fonts at launch.
Windows greys out the Install button
You already have that exact file. Look in C:\Windows\Fonts before you reinstall.
Font Book shows a warning triangle
Font Book found a duplicate or a damaged file. Pick File > Validate Font, then remove the copy it flags.
Bold text looks blurry
You probably installed only ARIALN.TTF. Add ARIALNB.TTF so apps stop faking the bold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download Arial Narrow for free?

You can get it at no extra cost by installing Microsoft Office, because the Office license includes it. Sites that hand out the bare TTF file for free are not licensed by Monotype, and using those files for client or commercial work puts you at risk. If you want a truly free font, use Liberation Sans Narrow, which has the same widths.

Why is Arial Narrow missing from Windows 11?

Windows 11 does not always include Arial Narrow on its own. Microsoft ships it with Office. If you uninstalled Office or bought a PC without it, the font disappears with it. Reinstalling or repairing Office brings it back.

I installed the font but Word still does not list it. What now?

Close every Word window, including ones minimized to the taskbar, then reopen Word. Office reads the font list only when it starts. If it still does not show, make sure you chose "Install for all users". Some apps ignore fonts installed only for one user account.

Do I need all four font files?

Install all four if you can. Without ARIALNB.TTF, pressing Ctrl+B makes Windows fake a bold by thickening the regular letters, which looks smudgy and prints badly. The same goes for the italic files.
